Why you’ll love this care package

When someone you care for is serving far from home, a little package of familiar treats and thoughtful details makes a big difference. I was thrilled to receive a short message from Soldier B. saying the care packages had boosted morale and that he and his fellow soldiers appreciated the homemade goodies and small comforts.

That message confirmed the most important thing: he was safe. It also reminded me that simple gestures—cookies, candy, and a cheerful box—can brighten a hard day.

Care package contents

I like to make the inside of a care package as cheerful as the treats inside. For holidays like Christmas or birthdays, lining the box or covering the flaps with themed wrapping paper is an easy way to set the tone. For Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, I cut festive shapes from colored paper and glue them to the flaps. For a baseball-themed box I used newspaper photos.

Free clip art is another simple decoration resource—I used small leprechaun images for this St. Patrick’s Day box. The finished package was filled with shamrock garland, leprechaun cut-outs, Lucky Charms cereal, gold foil chocolate coins, green-covered puzzle books, and a box of Girl Scout Thin Mints, all packed to bring smiles.

The combination of treats and themed decor makes opening the box an experience. Little details help the recipients feel remembered and appreciated.

Decorated cookies

This post usually features a simple iced sugar cookie, but for this package I chose to make chocolate-coated Oreos decorated for St. Patrick’s Day. Soldier B. enjoys chocolate-mint flavors, so I coated mint Oreos in dark dipping chocolate and decorated them with tinted white chocolate and green decorating sugar.

I learned that piped decorations with melted white chocolate behave differently than icing: they set very quickly. My early attempts—shamrocks and plaid patterns—didn’t turn out as planned. They looked messy, but my family happily tested those imperfect cookies.

In the end I settled on a clean, simple Celtic spiral. The spiral is an ancient Celtic symbol often associated with energy, growth, perseverance, and knowledge—qualities that make it a fitting, uplifting motif for a cookie meant for someone serving far from home.

The glittering green swirl may not have been my original plan, but it’s festive, Irish, and quick to execute. By changing the color of the tinted white chocolate and the decorator sugar, the same technique adapts to any holiday or celebration.

Below are helpful tips rather than a strict recipe. I used dark melting chocolate for coating because it’s easy to work with and keeps a glossy appearance. After the coating set, I piped the spiral with tinted white melting chocolate and immediately sprinkled green decorating sugar so it would stick before the chocolate hardened.

New recipe

The new recipe in this care package was Rainbow’s End Rocky Road Candy: a mix of chocolate, marshmallows, and peanuts dressed up for St. Patrick’s Day with rainbow chips and green nonpareils. I packed the rocky road in plastic food storage containers to protect it during shipping. If warm weather were a concern, those containers would also make the candy easy to eat by spoon if it softened en route.

More St. Patrick’s Day treats

If you want other themed ideas, try steel-cut-oat cookies for a chewy texture, chocolate-mint biscotti swirled with green mint for a festive touch, or traditional Irish tea brack—a spiced tea cake with raisins.

Ingredients

  • 12 sandwich cookies (chocolate-mint works well)
  • 2 cups melting chocolate (dipping discs)
  • ½ cup white melting chocolate (for piping)
  • Oil-based green candy coloring
  • Green decorating sugar or nonpareils

Instructions

  1. Line a cookie sheet or flat pan with wax paper and set it where it will fit into the refrigerator.
  2. Melt the dark melting chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power for one minute. Stir and continue in 15-second intervals at 50% power until fully melted.
  3. Dip each cookie into the melted chocolate using two forks to submerge and flip it, then lift and tap off excess chocolate. Place the coated cookie on the prepared pan.
  4. After coating the batch, refrigerate for 10–15 minutes to set the chocolate and achieve a slight surface shine.
  5. Melt ½ cup white melting chocolate at 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir and melt in 10-second intervals if needed. Stir in oil-based green candy coloring until evenly tinted. Spoon the colored chocolate into a disposable bag, snip a tiny corner, and pipe a spiral on each cookie. Immediately sprinkle green decorating sugar over each spiral before the chocolate hardens.
  6. When the coating is fully set, wrap cookies individually in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
