Spider Web Cake Recipe: How to Make Spider Nest Desserts

A last-minute Halloween sweet — Spider Nest Cakes come together in minutes. Bake the cupcakes the day before or buy them ready-made to save time.

Spider Nest Cakes

In South Africa Halloween traditions like trick-or-treating aren’t widespread. Some restaurants host events, but most celebrations are small gatherings at home. For these informal parties, quick and eye-catching treats are ideal.

These Spider Nest Cakes are perfect for a Halloween dessert table. They look spooky, are simple to assemble, and can be made using store-bought cupcakes or ones baked the day before.

Spider Nest Cakes

Kids love food that’s a little bit scary, and parties are more fun with themed treats. Using ready-made elements keeps prep time short and lets you focus on the finishing touches that make these cupcakes festive.

What you need for Spider Nest Cakes:

  • Unfrosted funfetti cupcakes (store-bought or homemade)
  • Marshmallow fluff (or ready-made frosting)
  • Cotton candy (any light color works best so the spider stands out)

Ingredients

  • 12 Unfrosted funfetti cupcakes
  • 12 t Marshmallow fluff
  • 2 Handfuls of cotton candy

Instructions

  • Place about one teaspoon of marshmallow fluff on top of each unfrosted cupcake to act as an adhesive for the cotton candy.
  • Just before serving, tear the cotton candy into 12 small nests and gently arrange each piece on top of the fluff. The cotton candy will hold its shape briefly for presentation.
  • Top each nest with a plastic or edible spider—use one large spider per cupcake or several small spiders depending on your display.

Notes

  • Assemble the cotton candy nests just before serving so they don’t melt or collapse.
