Smoked Salmon & Goat Cheese Crostini: Elegant Appetizer Recipe

Smoked Salmon Goat Cheese Appetizers

Smoked Salmon Goat Cheese Appetizers are elegant, easy-to-make bites that work beautifully for holidays, gatherings, or simply as a treat any time of year. The combination of creamy goat cheese and smoky salmon is an effortless crowd-pleaser.

Instead of crackers, I sometimes serve these on toasted bruschetta for a slightly heartier, toast-forward version. Both options look sophisticated but require minimal effort.

These appetizers are among my favorites to include on a Scandinavian-style buffet, often called a Swedish table — a casual, buffet-style spread featuring a variety of small plates and finger foods.

I like to shop at Costco for quality ingredients and bulk purchases when I expect guests, though you can find smoked salmon and other components at most grocery stores. I’m not sponsored — I just appreciate the selection and value.

When preparing a party for six, I usually pick up Norwegian smoked salmon slices — often a couple of packages. Typical varieties include Peppered, Traditional, and Dill, all of which pair nicely with goat cheese.

I often present these alongside a cheese board and other simple favorites like deviled eggs for a well-rounded appetizer spread.

Some smoked salmon packs include a honey-mustard dill sauce, which is a convenient and delicious accompaniment. You can make a similar sauce at home if you prefer, but using the included dressing keeps things simple.

If you don’t like goat cheese, any creamy spreadable cheese works — cream cheese, mascarpone, or a herbed fromage blanc are all excellent alternatives. That said, goat cheese complements smoked salmon particularly well.

Capers add a bright, briny pop and are a classic finishing touch on these bites. A small sprinkle gives great contrast to the rich cheese and smoky fish.

Smoked Salmon Goat Cheese Appetizers are perfect bites to serve over joyous holidays. However, in my humble opinion, these are divine perfection all year round.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz / 340 g smoked salmon slices (more if needed)
  • 5 oz / 150 g crackers or toasted bruschetta (more if needed)
  • 10 oz / 300 g goat cheese or another creamy cheese
  • 1/4 cup capers

Instructions

  1. Spread a generous layer of goat cheese on each cracker or toasted bread slice.
  2. Top with a slice of smoked salmon and a few capers. If using a sauce, drizzle a small amount of honey-mustard dill sauce or your preferred dressing.
  3. If the salmon slices are too large, cut them to size so each piece becomes a tidy, bite-sized portion.

Notes

You can substitute toasted bread slices or bruschetta for crackers. Any creamy cheese works if you prefer not to use goat cheese. Make extra — these assemble quickly and tend to disappear fast at parties.
