Emily VanCamp on Her Role in Captain America: Civil War

Disney Trip

As a longtime fan of the TV series Revenge, I was excited to see Emily VanCamp’s Agent 13 take on a larger role in Captain America: Civil War than she had in Winter Soldier. Sharon Carter’s determination, moral clarity and willingness to sacrifice for what’s right echo the qualities that made Emily’s work on Revenge so compelling.

Last month in Los Angeles I had the pleasure of speaking with Emily about how her background in dance informed her action work, what she dressed up as for Halloween for four straight years, and more.

You kicked some serious butt. Can you tell us about your training?

Emily VanCamp: It was a lot of physical training. I’d already done some work for Revenge, so transitioning into the films wasn’t completely new, but you want to arrive on set feeling strong and fit so you can keep up with everything. We were still wrapping Revenge when I began training for the movie, and it made me realize I could have pushed myself even more on the show. My dance background definitely helped — the action often comes down to choreography — and I hope to do more of it in future projects.

Was there a scene that was particularly difficult for you?

Emily: I wouldn’t call any scene difficult — more nerve-wracking because everyone brings their A-game. These films have such a strong track record that there’s pressure to live up to expectations. I had a small role in Winter Soldier, so participating more in Civil War felt intimidating at times. But the cast and crew, especially the Russo Brothers, were welcoming and supportive, which made it easier to do my best.

How do you feel about being remembered as Agent 13?

Emily: It’s really special to be part of this cinematic universe. The films are well-crafted, and being surrounded by so much talent makes the experience even better. What I love about Marvel is their attention to character — they let us develop real people within these larger-than-life stories, and that creative freedom is a gift. If fans respond to what we do, that’s an extra bonus.

What did you bring to the character?

Emily: Sharon’s moral compass is what drew me to her. I admire characters with integrity, and Sharon wrestles with that in the film as her loyalties and duties conflict. That inner struggle is interesting to play and helped me find the emotional center of the role.

Did you have a favorite superhero growing up?

Emily: I was obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For four Halloweens in a row I dressed as one — Donatello one year and Michelangelo for three years because, of course, I loved pizza. Whether they count as superheroes or not, they were my inspiration as a kid.

Which action scene required the most choreography?

Emily: I have one main fight sequence in the film, so in hindsight I probably overtrained a bit. The stunt team is incredible and they guide you through every movement until you feel confident. It’s always challenging, but also a lot of fun — I genuinely enjoy that work.

How do you feel about being a role model for young women?

Emily: I disagree with the notion that public figures have no obligation to be role models. Even if it’s not an obligation, having a voice offers a choice — and I choose to use mine to empower young women. I don’t always play the same type of character: I recently starred in The Girl in the Book, a much more grounded and realistic role, but I’m drawn to characters who show strength in different ways. With three sisters and many strong women in my life, I’m invested in supporting opportunities for girls. If I can inspire someone even in a small way, I’m happy to do so.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters Friday, May 6. Enjoy the movie and the debates about teams — whether you choose #TeamIronMan, #TeamCap, or simply want to celebrate the film, there’s plenty to enjoy for fans of the Marvel universe.
