This construction site cake has everything a kids’ birthday cake needs: it’s tasty, looks special, and is surprisingly easy to make. We baked this digger cake for our son’s 4th birthday and paired it with matching vehicle plates, police napkins, and cups.
Taste and Occasion
The birthday boy and his guests loved it, and they insisted I share the recipe. At first I thought this idea wasn’t remarkable enough for its own post, especially since I’m not usually a fan of elaborate motif cakes. That’s why I created a construction site cake without fondant: a simple mole cake transformed into a digging scene. The base recipe is uncomplicated and you can decorate it any way you like — I used toys from our son’s collection (concrete mixer, excavator, truck, traffic pylons), but store-bought construction sets work well too.

Ingredients
This digger cake is essentially a classic mole cake: a straightforward cake batter baked in a small pan, hollowed slightly after baking, then filled and shaped into a dome with whipped cream. For a fresh fruity note, add banana pieces and/or cherries into the cream. Crumbled cake around the dome becomes the “earth” for the construction vehicles.
Because our son can’t tolerate cocoa or chocolate, I adapted the color and flavor using cinnamon, whole cane sugar, and carob. A touch of food coloring helped achieve the look of a construction site. The result was a crowd-pleaser — simple, playful, and delicious.

How to Make the Construction Site Cake
Preheat the oven to 360°F (180°C). Grease a small springform pan (7 in / 18 cm). Beat the softened butter with brown sugar until fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa (or carob), baking powder, and optional cinnamon. Grate the chocolate if using, and fold the dry ingredients and chocolate briefly into the butter-egg mixture.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for about 30 minutes. Allow the cake to cool completely. Place the cake on a large plate and, using a tablespoon, scoop out a shallow rim of about 0.4 in / 1 cm — be careful not to hollow the bottom too deeply so the cake stays stable. Crumble the removed cake pieces into a bowl for later.
Slice the bananas into small pieces and spread them over the hollowed center. Whip the cream with sugar and cream stiffener until firm, then mound it onto the cake in a dome shape, nearly to the edge. Sprinkle the dome and the surrounding area with the crumbled cake to mimic soil, gently pressing the crumbs into the cream so they stick. Chill the cake for about 1 hour, dust the dome and plate with a little baking cocoa (or carob powder) for added color, and arrange small toy vehicles and traffic signs on top for the construction site effect.

Top Tip
If you need a chocolate-free version, replace cocoa with a mix of carob and cinnamon and use whole cane sugar for a deep color and gentle flavor. Decorating ideas: mini traffic cones, small signs, and toy construction vehicles bring the theme to life without complicated sugar work.
